My favorite story today is “At home, in the fields of the lord” by Wallace Stegner. Stegner and I share two things about our lives, we both grew up in Salt Lake City. Stegner’s description of Salt Lake City is distinctive; He is able to describe the feeling of living in this town. Although the feeling of living here may have stayed the same between Stegner’s lifetime and my own, it is apparent that the city has changed drastically. Stegner describes a hot springs on 600 West, which is now the abandoned building that housed the children’s museum when I was growing up. Stegner talks about the state prison in what is now sugar house park, and I read in the newspaper the other day about moving the prison from Draper.
