I’ve been fascinated by the concept of the Hero’s Journey, because it really does apply to so many films and stories we consume. It infiltrates the TV shows we watch, the novels we read, and the games we play. It spans every genre. Everyone likes a comeback story.
In fact, in movies where the hero’s journey isn’t present, there’s a tangible missing element. It feels off. It feels like it’s missing something, but it’s extremely difficult to put a finger on exactly what is missing.
I’ve spent the last couple days thinking about examples that don’t use the Hero’s Journey, but I can’t! That must, more than anything, display the truthfulness of the power of the concept of the Hero’s Journey.

I can’t really think of examples that don’t use it either! I think that there are some examples…but because they are so rare it’s hard to come up with them. I somewhat agree with what you said about how a film or story feels off if it doesn’t have the heroes journey, but actually even though it seems strange at first I sort of like when a film or book or whatever is different than the usual. It feels more fresh. I’m not sure if it would be something that would catch on though because people tend to hold onto the things that are more familiar, myself included. – Breanna Larson
